Print is dead! Long live print! What's the real story?
More than 80 publications serving Colorado's Front Range communities found out the hard way over the past two years, as our state’s few remaining commercial printing presses have closed, reduced capacity, or raised prices — throwing many local news publishers into a tailspin.
Some publications are now printing in Wyoming, Kansas or New Mexico. Some consolidated their brands. Some closed up shop. But almost all who remain in business are paying significantly more to produce their print products — which for most, still account for the vast majority of their razor-thin profit margins, thanks to dedicated local advertisers who recognize the value of their trusted, local brands.
Join us March 22 as we hear how local news innovators at the National Trust for Local News and Colorado Community Media are rewriting the story about print — with support from Colorado Media Project and our Press Forward Colorado Funder Table.
Five years ago, a broad coalition of Colorado's higher education, business, philanthropic, civic and community leaders galvanized around the importance of sustaining local journalism for a healthy democracy. Since then, Colorado’s local news ecosystem has become a beacon for the nation, with dozens of innovative initiatives emerging, and a new spirit of collaboration, optimism and community service taking hold among newsrooms across the state. At this invigorating half-day summit on Sept. 21, CMP grantees, partners, and community members will embark on a forward-looking journey to envision what the state's local news and information ecosystem will look like in the NEXT five years — and how, by working together, we can continue to build a more functional and inclusive public square for Colorado, both online and offline.

Sen. Michael Bennet will give a brief update on his recently co-sponsored Future of Local News Commission Act and other media-related issues pending federal action such as platform accountability and combatting misinformation.
Local news leaders who represent many outlets, business models and platforms, are invited to help inform this federal conversation and ground it in local community information needs. Specifically, Sen. Bennet wants to hear perspectives from local journalists across Colorado:
What are you experiencing in you newsroom that a bipartisan Future of Local News Commission or other federal legislation (eg: a new COVID relief package) might be able to address?
What specific issues, possible solutions, and caveats should federal legislators consider?

Colorado Media Project is excited to announce that this year, in partnership with the Colorado News Collaborative (COLab), News Revenue Hub and NewsMatch, our year-end #newsCOneeds campaign will become an ecosystem-wide, public awareness-building opportunity for Colorado newsrooms to join forces to amplify the positive impacts they are making in their communities, and to build trust in and support for their local public-service journalism. Colorado newsrooms selected for the cohort will work with COLab and News Revenue Hub to co-create messaging, graphics, and collateral.
In addition, CMP will offer $5,000 matching grants to selected nonprofit and locally-owned Colorado newsrooms, in collaboration with the national NewsMatch campaign. Applications are due by 5 p.m. MT on Monday, September 28.

University of Colorado’s Water Desk is offering micro-grants of up to $2,000 and standard grants of up to $10,000 for freelance and staff journalists covering issues related to Western water.
