2022 CMP Convening - Advancing Equity in Local News

Whether you're a Colorado journalist, a student or faculty member, a librarian or teacher, an advocate or business leader, a funder or community member or civic leader — we invite you to join us for a unique convening designed to inspire your sense of what's possible for the future our local civic news and engagement in our democracy, hosted by Colorado Media Project and sponsored by The Colorado Trust.

WHY ARE WE CONVENING?

To learn, share, reflect and grow together. The primary goal of this convening is for CMP grantees from across Colorado to lift up what they're doing to advance equity in local news, to share what they're learning, to wrestle with big questions they're encountering, and to draw out new ideas for next steps. Every session is designed to be enlightening, thought-provoking, and inspiring — with a diverse mix of perspective and voices, including local journalists, national experts, community members and funders.

This convening is being designed with partners for in-person attendance, though we will be streaming a handful of sessions live and recording some sessions. NOTE: If you are a current CMP grantee who needs assistance with travel costs, please note that on your RSVP. We will contact you with information regarding travel stipends as soon as it's available.

HOW AND WHAT WILL WE LEARN?

  • Wednesday evening join us for a welcome reception at Rocky Mountain PBS’ Buell Public Media Center in downtown Denver. Take a peek into the COLab Newsroom on the third floor — home to a dozen Colorado newsrooms and media organizations— as we welcome our out-of-town guests and set the stage for the days to come.

  • Thursday sessions will spotlight and build on work supported by 25 new grants CMP announced in January totaling nearly $1 million to support Colorado newsrooms, journalists, and media entrepreneurs to strengthen coverage of and service to Colorado's diverse communities of color, as well as rural and low-income residents. Our session themes include:

  • Friday morning we’ll share new data from the 2022 Colorado Media Survey, and offer hands-on workshops for reporting on inequities, and raising awareness of and support for local journalism. At lunch we’ll be treated to a keynote address from Maria Hinojosa, whose 30-year career as an award-winning journalist includes reporting for PBS, CBS, WNBC, CNN, NPR, and Anchor and Executive Producer of her Peabody Award-winning show, Latino USA. We'll also be joined by Colorado Press Association for a day of joint programming — including a learning track designed especially for media outlets that serve diverse communities.

Space is limited - RSVP today to save your spot! (As of Aug. 26, we are approaching capacity.)

We are thrilled to be sharing a venue and collaborating with the Colorado Press Association for their 2022 Annual Conference (which takes place Sept. 15-17 also at Lowry Conference Center in Aurora). Please note that separate registration for the CPA Conference is required; more information can be found here.
