In the summer of 2022, Colorado Media Project and Corona Insights designed and implemented a state-wide survey of Colorado news audiences. This survey collected data from more than 1,800 residents on news consumption habits, trust in local news, payment and subscription behaviors, what drives audience members to support local news, opinions on various local news media funding models, and more.
The statewide data tables are available and free for all to use here, and can help local news outlets, policy-makers, and funders as they seek to understand how to build public trust in local news and civic information, and point the way toward new products and sustainable revenue models for local outlets.
CMP can provide local newsrooms with individualized links to mirrors of the Corona Insights survey, which will enable newsrooms to share the survey with, and collect responses from, their own audiences, subscribers, and mailing lists. This provides a free opportunity for your newsroom to collect audience preference, engagement, and development data via a professionally designed survey. Individual collectors can then compare their data to the state-wide survey data.
Approved requests will receive a survey link from Corona Insights, guidance on distributing the survey, and (after your data collection period) an Excel spreadsheet including both the state-wide survey data, and the data from your individualized link.
Please note that CMP and Corona Insights will not be able to provide data analysis or summary reporting on survey results for each newsroom — but in 2023 we do plan to offer additional workshops with Corona Insights on digging into the survey data and designing research-based focus groups to better understand local news audiences and develop new products and services to reach them.
